Our Games HR / Ops Network: Bringing Together The People People

At Talewind, we believe that in order to make great games, the people behind them have to be happy and supported. People are what makes our studio, and our People Team work hard to support our staff and cultivate a studio culture that is open, inclusive & fun. But who is there to support the people people?

Back in 2020, we noticed that there were plenty of opportunities and platforms for developers, artists and producers to come together within gaming circles but little to note for those working within People,  HR & Ops roles. So, our COO (Gina Felce) and People Director (Katie Nurse) decided to set up the ‘Games HR / Ops Network’ with the aim of bringing together those who work in this area to share information, ask questions and get to know one another.

”Having a support network of HR & Ops professionals is so important, especially for those in standalone roles, but to also have one specifically for the intricacies that come with the games industry provides that safe space to ask questions but also share best practices which is positive for the industry as a whole. I hope to see it grow even more!”

Nicola Head, People & Development Director @ Stellar Entertainment

In the past 2 years, the group has grown to over 100 members from small start up studios to big name companies from across the gaming industry. And we’re always on the lookout for new members!

The main form of communication is via our Slack group, where specific channels have been set up for HR & People related topics such as: Diversity & Inclusion; Wellbeing; Benefits & more. But we also arrange in person meet ups for a chance to bounce ideas and catch up in person – sometimes there’s nothing better than face to face communication!

”I really appreciate the Games HR/Ops Slack group to be able to throw ideas around and know it’s a space we can discuss industry specific issues with care and balance, knowing that there’s a wealth of knowledge and experience coming from within it.”

Lyndy Bailey, Studio Coordinator @ Ground Shatter

Why Join?

  • Resource sharing. The group combined has 100s of years experience in the gaming industry and this kind of knowledge is invaluable – whether you’re just starting out in games or have worked in the industry for years (it’s never too late to learn something new).

  • Advice & support. If you’re stuck on a task or need advice on a HR query, the group is there to help you come up with a solution! Our Slack Group is used often as a platform to ask questions – the likelihood is that someone among us will be able to help.

  • Networking opportunities. If you’re looking to meet people who work in a role similar to yours, here’s the chance! We’re a super friendly bunch who are always open to chat and, more importantly, listen.

  • Fun events! To date, we’ve hosted 2 in person events (in London and Brighton) and are planning another in the coming months. By joining the group, you’ll have access to these events and we’re always open to ideas for the next one 🙂

”Joining the Games HR/Ops network has been great! It’s my first role within gaming and everyone has been incredibly welcoming and supportive. I have been lucky to attend a couple of in person events and have met some great people so far. Through the group, I have reached out to a couple of people individually as well as engaging in group chats for things like advice, resources and a general sounding board and everyone has been so quick to offer up anything that will help.”
